Manhattan
Drama, Romance, Comedy, 1979: 96 minutes
A United Artists Release
"I'm dating a girl who does homework."
Never has a city been the object of a love as deep and abiding as
Woody Allen's for New York, and never did this talented
writer-director create an urban valentine more funny and heartfelt
than Manhattan. From the sleek art deco look of Gordon Willis's expert
black-and-white cinematography to the thrilling Gershwin score, this
paean to the Big Apple is a sophisticated delight. Allen is at the top
of his game, even if he's mining somewhat familiar territory. As Isaac
Davis, a neurotic (what else?) New York (it goes without saying)
writer (naturally), the Woodman is once again befuddled in love. This
time, he's torn between his worldly wise though high-school-aged
girlfriend (Best Supporting Actress nominee Mariel Hemingway) and a
pretentious but irresistible woman (Diane Keaton), who happens to be
having an affair with his married best friend. Meanwhile, he's fending
off the all-too-public attacks of his lesbian ex-wife (then-rising
star Meryl Streep). The film strikes the perfect balance between humor
and substance; it's a real thinking person's comedy. Also starring
Michael Murphy as Isaac's hypocritical yuppie pal, with an amusing
cameo by Wallace Shawn as Keaton's idolized ex-husband. --Rick Schultz

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
