City Lights
Comedy, 1931: 86 minutes
A United Artists Release
While this comedy masterpiece was still being made, All Quiet on the
Western Front and The Blue Angel were released, making silent films
virtually obsolete. But director Charlie Chaplin went ahead anyway,
composing a lovely musical score to accompany this touching story of a
blind girl (Virginia Cherrill) and the tramp (Chaplin) who falls in
love with her. Some of the director's most hilarious comic sequences
and running gags can be found in City Lights, including one built
around a nutty millionaire (Harry Myers) who only recognizes Charlie
when he's drunk. This is one of Chaplin's greatest films, which means
it's one of the greatest ever. --Rick Schultz

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
