Asked about The Graduate's famous happy ending, the film's 
Oscar-winning director, Mike Nichols, liked to puncture expectations 
by predicting that Elaine and Ben would become just like their nasty, 
materialistic parents. But for viewers more romantically inclined, 
there are few greater movie highs than seeing Ben and Elaine hop on 
that bus to the freedom of an uncertain future. The Graduate, 
beautifully photographed by Robert Surtees, scored by Simon and 
Garfunkel, and written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham, stars the 
brilliant Dustin Hoffman in his first major film role. The wonderful 
cast also includes Katharine Ross as the innocent Elaine, Anne 
Bancroft as her predatory mom, and Murray Hamilton and William Daniels 
as the thickheaded dads. Richard Dreyfuss makes a quick appearance in 
a Berkeley rooming house, managed by paranoid Norman Fell. And Buck 
Henry delights as a hotel desk clerk. If you haven't seen this film 
for a while, you may be surprised how well it holds up. --Rick Schultz
