Dismissed by most American critics at the time of its first release, 
Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo daringly broke many of the rules of the 
mystery and suspense genres with its dreamlike narrative and visual 
style. But today Vertigo is widely regarded as a Hitchcock 
masterpiece, one of the most unabashedly personal films ever to emerge 
from the studio system. Hitchcock's obsession with cool, mysterious 
blondes is passionately reflected in the relationship between James 
Stewart's San Francisco detective and Kim Novak, the strange woman he 
falls in love with after being hired to follow her on a haunted trail 
into the past. Taking romantic obsession to the point of madness and 
beyond, Vertigo plumbs unexpected depths of character and emotion.
