No film captures the psychological fissures in the American character 
better than John Ford's The Searchers. This epic Western about a 
five-year search for a white girl kidnapped by Indians revolves around 
the flinty racist Ethan Edwards (John Wayne), a man whose strengths 
and inner demons seem to emanate from the harshly beautiful landscape 
he inhabits. Tracing Ethan's saga from anguish to hatred to resigned 
self-exile, The Searchers critically examines the white-supremacist 
assumptions on which the Western genre and the country itself were 
based, making it as profound a study of racism as Mark Twain's
