The Hustler 
 
Drama, 1961: 135 minutes 
A 20th Century Fox Pictures Release 
 
       "I'm shootin' pool, Fats. When I miss, you can shoot." 
 
In director Robert Rossen's stylishly seedy, thematically rich, and 
hard-as-nails portrait of a hubristic young pool hustler (Paul 
Newman), we watch as the gifted but immature con artist evolves slowly 
into a self-respecting professional with character. In the picture's 
famous opening sequence (cinematographer Eugen Shuftan won an Oscar), 
Newman loses a marathon all-night match to aging champion Minnesota 
Fats (Jackie Gleason). Later he's mentored by George C. Scott's 
gangsterish gambler in what amounts to a Faustian bargain, and he 
learns a little (but not enough) about caring from neurotic alcoholic 
Piper Laurie. It's a fine, daringly unsympathetic turn by Newman, and 
rivals that of his role in Hud as his best performance. --Carmel Dagan
