Out of the Past 
 
Noir, 1947: 97 minutes

       "I know a lot of smart guys and a few honest ones, but you're 
both." 
 
One of the quintessential examples of film noir, Out of the Past is a 
sultry private-eye movie starring Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and 
Jane Greer. Mitchum is a shamus hired by gangster Douglas to track 
down his perfidious mistress, who shot him and absconded with his 
money. Greer's provocative deadliness overcomes even the jaded 
Mitchum's defenses, enveloping him in a web of violence and deceit. 
Director Jacques Tourneur, coming off a series of stylish horror films 
(Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie), creates an eerily seductive 
atmosphere with the help of cameraman Nicholas Musuraca. Much-imitated 
and forgettably remade (as Against All Odds), Out of the Past remains 
as intoxicating and provocative as ever. --Joseph McBride
