gangster." 
 
Based on the experiences of real-life mobster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), 
director Martin Scorsese's spectacular, irreverent picture explores 
Mafia mores from the perspective of an admiring insider gradually 
making his way up the chain. The funny, knowing script by Scorsese and 
journalist Nicholas Pileggi (whose book Wiseguy was the film's basis) 
emphasizes the insularity of Mafia society and its perverted moral 
values. As Hill's wife, Lorraine Bracco convincingly explores how 
someone can be seduced by gangster glamour, while Oscar winner Joe 
Pesci steals the show as a mobster whose violent temper leads to acts 
of reckless sadism, and Robert De Niro is unusually understated. Watch 
for the famous long, exquisite tracking shot following Liotta and 
Bracco into a dazzling mob nightclub. --Carmel Dagan
