Stagecoach
Action, Western, 1939: 96 minutes
A United Artists Release
"There are some things a man can't run away from."
From its breathless introductory close-up of John Wayne and its first
sweeping vista of Monument Valley, John Ford's Stagecoach has the
freshness of revelation. Yet in reinventing the Western genre in this
enormously influential film, Ford was not breaking entirely new ground
but building on the conventions of the B Westerns from which he
rescued Wayne's career. Stock characters achieve the startling clarity
of mythic archetypes in this picaresque saga of a group of misfits
traveling across the Arizona frontier by stagecoach, besieged by
Apaches and torn by internal conflict. As 1939 America stood on the
brink of war, Stagecoach served as a pointed allegory of the nation's
internal tensions. --Joseph McBride

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
