The only X-rated film to win the Best Picture Oscar, John 
Schlesinger's sleazy salute to New York's down-and-out set is, perhaps 
ironically, as life-affirming as it is overwhelmingly depressing. Joe 
Buck (Jon Voight), a Texas naif, arrives in the Big Apple with the 
notion of turning high-priced gigolo. Reality quickly intrudes, and 
after suffering the humiliation of a homosexual liaison, he takes up 
with a petty thief and tubercular named Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman). 
A touching, if odd, friendship forms, with the two deciding that 
Florida is the place for them. Schlesinger and screenwriter Waldo Salt 
won Oscars, but the brilliant Hoffman and Voight lost to John Wayne's 
True Grit, perhaps because they split the vote. --David Mermelstein
