Dale Grundle, lead singer and guitarist from Catchers, talks to Sampler...
Your albums have had excellent reviews yet the public seem slow to follow? W
hy?
It's true that we have been extremely lucky with most of our reviews. I thin
k that the reason why we are not very well known in the UK is probably becau
se we have never really fitted into any scene here. It makes it so much easi
er to get press, support tours, etc. if you can be placed in a nice little pa
ckage. Unfortunately the only way most people in this country get to know ab
out new bands is from the NME and Melody Maker. If you are not championed by
these magazines it can be a real struggle to get your name around. It is a
real shame alternative radio has no real power here. At least you get to mak
e your own mind up.
You have quite the reputation in France however?
Yeah. It started there with our first two singles. We had absolutely no idea
that we had generated so much interest. A French DJ, Bernard Lenoir, had be
en playing 'Cotton Dress' pretty heavily and the press had been very good, a
nd we ended up playing there more than anywhere else just after the release
of 'Mute'.
We got on stage at our first gig and saw all these 'Catchers' banners and he
ard people singing along to our songs. It was a bit of a shock to say the le
ast. Our first gig was to about 2,000 people.
In my review, I described your new album "Stooping To Fit"... "Each song is
a mood swing in the true 'listening to Indie in your bedroom' tradition". Is
that something you can associate both yourself and your music with?
Well, I can see what you are saying. I think that moving to a city from our
lovely little town has had quite an affect on the band and the music. I wrot
e the first album, 'Mute' back home in Portstewart. This album was written d
uring our travels in New York , London, France and Ireland. Even though it w
as an incredible time for us we did feel very unsettled. A lot of the songs
on 'Stooping..' are about trying to find your own little corner of the world
. In addition to that, you can only spend so long in a smelly van, looking at
the same faces before you need your own space. In relation to me, yeah, it'
s probably true. I really must get out more.
One of my favorite tracks from the album is "Spellbound" which Alice sings..
. why did you chose to give the vocal to Alice?
I couldn't reach the notes.
What music has influenced your life and/or your music?
It's funny because everything I listen to does not seem to translate into wh
at I do. My favourite records include:
'Clear Spot'- Captain Beefheart
'Transmissions...'- Flaming Lips
'Soundtracks'- Can
'Spirit of Eden'- Talk Talk
'Raindogs'- Tom Waits
Most of Nick Drake's stuff.
These are either the albums I listen to the most, or the albums that maintai
n some relevance to me.
Which current artists do you think have "got it"?
Thankfully I have discovered quite a few recently. I love the Grandaddy reco
rd, Sparklehorse, dEUS, Yann Tierson, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev (I'm just ge
tting into the Grasshopper album), Portishead, etc. Oh, and I suppose I shoul
d mention Beck. Any pop music with a twist.
Is there too much "re-cycling" in most guitar bands these days as these days
you seldom hear anything new?
Yes. The thing I love most about the records I mentioned earlier is that whe
n I first heard them, the most striking thing about them was that they sound
ed totally different to anything I had heard before. Maybe I am being too mu
so-like but hearing Sonic Youth or the Velvets for the first time is somethi
ng I will never forget. I haven't heard anything that exciting for a long ti
me. The Brit-pop thing just freaked me out. I couldn't relate to it at all.
Unfortunately the aftermath is still with us. It's just that they seem to wa
nt to play stadiums now instead of Camden pubs.
What sort of impact on the music industry do you think the Internet will eve
ntually have? Revolution or passing fad?
To be totally honest I actually haven't had that much experience with the In
ternet. All of this is relatively new to me. As far as the music business go
es - Who knows? All the main record companies seem to be merging and making
it harder for smaller labels to compete. If the Internet can help to change
that, then great! At least people get to hear samples of records that they m
ight not be able to hear on their local radio stations.
For the UK I hope that it weakens the hold that certain publications have on
things. Even the rest of Europe looks upon these magazines for what bands/r
ecords to promote. If the Internet will give people more freedom to choose w
hat they actually want then I'm totally behind it.
Where are Catchers going now... touring? Writing?
At the moment we are trying to get a tour organized in the UK. We are starti
ng a European tour in Oct. which will take in France, Belgium, Switzerland,e
tc. and doing some promotional stuff in between. Apart from that, the work f
or the next album has begun! If the UK doesn't get it with the next album I
think it's time to get some mop-tops.
