 Feynman's work on the atomic bomb

After graduating from Princeton University, Feynman almost immediately
proceeded to Los Alamos to participate in the construction of the first
atomic bombs. Feynman began his time at Los Alamos as a 'worker bee'
crunching numbers all day long. Some of the questions that Feynman and his
colleagues were working on included calculating the critical mass and
critical radius of the bombs, finding out what material would keep the
neutrons from flying out of the bomb itself, and deciding how much
uranium/plutonium they would need. Feynman proved very impressive in his
work. He so impressed his superiors that he was soon promoted and given
control of the Los Alamos theoretical division. Later, Feynman noticed that
the way in which radioactive waste was being stored in a separate plant in
Tennessee was potentially dangerous. Soon he developed a new method of
storing the materials, a method that was far safer than the old one. Several
of the workers at the plant believed, with good reason, that Feynman had
saved their lives. In fact, this was the case. Feynman was also probably the
first person to see the first nuclear explosion at the Trinity test site.
