I'm writing to you to state my view on the water pollution problem. It is ge
nerally accepted that water pollution is a serious public hazard today. Rive
rs all over the world are becoming polluted with garbage and dangerous chemi
cals. Ships contribute to the problem because they rely on rivers for dispos
ing of wastes. Oil and other chemicals can kill fish and make water unsafe f

As you know, people depend on water to live on. They should be involved in f

n problem. In addition, factories in towns and cities must be prohibited fro
m draining waste liquids into rivers before they are totally treated and pur
ified. I feel if they violate relevant rules or laws, they should be fined h
eavily. Certainly, there are some other cures which are worth adopting.
  As far as future prospect is concerned, I am sure that good results will b
e achieved in this respect. Rivers which used to be contaminated by industri
al wastes will be cleaned and fish which could not live there a few years ag
o will be again. To conclude, it seems obvious that tomorrow will be better 
and brighter only if everyone does his part and tries hard to seek solutions
 for its control.

  Tourism, a smokeless industry, is developing rapidly in China. With the re
form and opening -up policy being carried out, thousands upon thousands of f
oreign visitors are crowding into our country. They are eager to see this ol
d mysterious land with a splendid culture of more than 5, 000 years.
  Tourism as a form of enterprise brings China a lot of benefits. In the fir
es place, it is financially beneficial to the economic development of China.
 As our know, China needs more and more foreign currencies for its moderniza
tion program. Tourism is one of the most important channels to obtain curren
cies. Secondly, tourism enables the Chinese people to know more about the ou
tside world. On the other hand, the foreigners who have visited China are de
eply impressed by the latest developments of out country and the friendlines
s and hospitality of our people. Reports by visitors to China about how cour
teous and helpful most Chinese were to them are often printed in newspapers 
of many different countries. It is clear that tourism contributes a great de

Since China opened its door to the outside world in 1979, Beijing has made r
emarkable results in attracting foreign business to invest in joint ventures
. According to the pie chart, the investors in different enterprises come fr
om 26 countries and regions. Hong Kong investment ranks first, accounting fo
r 44 per cent of the total. Japan's investment makes up 19.2 per cent, putti
ng it in second spot. Third is the United States at 16 per cent.
It is generally believed that Beijing benefits a lot from the outside invest
ment. In the first place, a large number of joint ventures have been set up,
 which contributes greatly to the development of Capital Economy. Secondly, 
the foreign-invested enterprises offer a lot of jobs to the residents in Bei

  There is no denying the fact that competitions with prizes can bring peopl

On Keeping a Diary in English
Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our Engli
sh writing ability. Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and 
takes less time. It can help us to cultivate the habit of thinking in Englis
h. If we persist in his practice, gradually we'll learn how to express ourse
lves in English.
     In keeping a diary in English, we inevitably run up against a lot of di
fficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble findin
g appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, th

As the picture given depicts, the socialist market-oriented economy in our c
ountry is developing rapidly, just like a truck running at a high speed. But
 the general public is surprised to find that there are more and more fake a
nd inferior products seriously hampering the expansion of our marker economy
. Consumers have to be very careful in purchasing goods and services they ne
ed; otherwise they will fall into the traps set by the illegal manufacturers
 who make fake and inferior products.
There is no doubt that fake and inferior products are extremely harmful. In 
the first place, they endanger people's health, giving rise to a lot of inju
ry accidents. For instance, inferior-quality medicines not only aggravate a 
patient's condition, but also tend to threaten his life and, what's worse, t

　　Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true that most o
f them try to acquire wealth by means of honest labour. Their efforts contri
bute to the welfare of the society and at the same time to the accumulation 
of their wealth, and hence to their happiness.
   There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness, especially in the modern 
society. Various kinds of up-to-date household appliances, latest fashions a
nd recreations make their appearance with each passing day. All this makes o
ur life more comfortable and colourful. Therefore, without money we cannot t
urn admiration into reality.
   But there are exceptions when wealth does not go hand in hand with happin
ess. Wealth may tempt weak-willed persons to be addicted to harmful habits, 
such as drug-taking and gambling, and result in their own ruin. Besides, a p
erson may lose his even some government officials who take advantage of thei
r positions to take bribes from the people turning to them for help. All the
se will bring about the negative effect of wealth if we don't take a proper 
attitude to it.
   In my opinion, on no account can we identify wealth with happiness. I als
o believe that one should never reckon only on wealth to achieve happiness .

     According to the figures given by the graph, the Chinese farmers' perso
nal income rose steadily from 1970 to 1990. In the middle of 1970's their in
come was rather low. Their annual personal income was about 180 yuan. But in
 1980 the average personal income increased approximately 50%, reaching 270 
yuan. As is shown by the graph, in 1985 their income doubled, amounting to 5
40 yuan. After that there was a consistent tendency for income to grow. In a
 word, during the period of 20 years the farmers' income had gone up rapidly
.
     There were two reasons for the increase in the farmers' income in China
. Firstly, the Chinese government had been carrying out a reform and opening
 policy. A large number of county-run enterprises had been set up in the rur
al areas. Secondly, a significant reform of agricultural policy had been car
ried out in China. The Party's policy had brought farmers' initiative into f
ull play. As a result, the agricultural output had been on the rise all the 
time. All these factors resulted in the steady growth of farmers' income.
      I believe that with a series of agricultural policies being carried ou
t, there will be even more rapid development in China's agriculture. There i

A recent survey analyzed the change in number of film-goers and TV watchers 
in X city. As is shown by the graph, there has been a sharp decline in the n
umber of film-goers during the period from 1992 to 2002, adding up to 20,000
 in 2002. On the other hand, the number of TV watchers has steadily increase
 in the last decade, reaching 150,000 in 2002. Finally, it is interesting to
 note that there were as many film-goers as TV watchers in year 1998.
There might be two reason, I think, for the change. Firstly, TV is not only 
a convenient source of entertainment, but a comparatively cheap one. There i
s no point in arranging transport. And one needn't pay for expensive seats a
t the cinema. Secondly, TV makes it possible for one to keep track of curren
t events and the latest developments in science and technology. As a consequ
ence, most people prefer to stay at home, watching TV, rather than go out to
 the cinema, which wastes both time and money.
Personally, there are still a lot of people who enjoy watching films. They a
rgue that the film is a fascinating form of art. Sitting comfortably in the 
cinema, one can appreciate the latest movies, which will usually be shown on
 TV far later on. Therefore, I trust the number of film-goers will be on the
