I = Me O = visa official
I: Nice to meet you here, sir.
O:NI HAO. ( All the people in front of me spoke Chinese. Most of them applied
for TAN QIN QIAN ZHEN and were somewhat old. So when the visa official heard
my English, he raised his head and smiled a little.)
O:So you want to study for the doctorate degree?
I: (hesitated) Yes.
O: But the Humanities Department in the XXX University had no PhD. THey had
only M.A.
I: (hurriedly) Yes. I also found the problem in I-20. I was a little confused
by it . SO I called the chairman there and he asked one of their professors
who just travelled here to explain it to you if possible.
O:Is he in SHenyang?
I: Yes, just outside. And I also have some other materials which proved that
I would pursue an MA. the chairman's letters and the Assistantship/Scholarship

O: Give them to me please.
I: (I gave all the letters to him.) It seemed that there are always some
mistakes in my I-20. In fact last time I also got one from the same
university and there was something wrong with the money I got from the
department. SO I didn't apply for a visa and waited till now. You know I am a
little nervous and worried and don't know how to explain it to you.
O: Yes I know.Pleas give me the former I-20 .
I: GIve the form to him.
O: It is confusing. You got all the money from the department?
I: Yes. Please look at the yellow page. It is the Assistantship/Scholarship
Contact from the department and it explains the money I got from the
department.
O: So you are a teacher?
I: Yes I am a teacher in the Liaoning University.
O: What are you teaching?
I: History.
Then I noticed that he was writing something on my OF-156.
I:(explained when he was writing) Two or three of my collegues came back from
the university and they got a high position and good salary. I think that is
also good for me if I get one degree from the university. You know an
American degree is very helpful now in China.
O: Yes, it is. (and he looked at me.) So you know the university from your
colleagues who just came back?
I: Yes. And I also have assigned one contact with my university, Liaoning
Unversity. ( I show it to him.) I am sorry that it is not in English. BUt the
people in the office don't know English and they wouldn't stamp on the
English version. So I have to bring you a CHinese one.
O: (nodded.) I see.
I: Would you please have a look at the card? THis is my lawyer qualification
certificate.(LV SHI ZHENG) I am a part-time lawyer now. I plan to know much
more about Americans in the study. THen when I come back to China, I could be
a good lawyer in the cases about the relation between Chinese and Americans.
O: Yes. ( He began to tear one piece of white paper and hand it to me
together with the materials I handed in.) Please come here to get your
passport at four oclock this afternoon.
I: THank you sir. But do you want to keep the both I-20 forms in your place?
O: Oh , I am sorry. (And give me the school part of I-20)
I: Thank you sir. Maybe some day when we see each other in the street, I will
say hello to you.
O: yes maybe.
I: will you still be here after two years?
O:Yes.
I: That's good. So would you please let me know your name?
O: (smiled and shaked his head) No I couldn't.
I: That's Ok. Thanks again. Bye.
